Burlington Takes Fiscal Role Seriously – Mayor

Fiscal accountability is an achievement Burlington City Council has taken seriously in its first year since the 2007 municipal election, Cam Jackson told about 60 Burlington Chamber of Commerce members at its March 20th Business Forum.

“Remember, while we were campaigning door to door, city staff prepared the largest ever budget guideline,” the Mayor said. He added that the document was then a top priority for a council with three new members – including himself – out of seven on it.

The document called for a 9.5 per cent increase in spending, but it was exactly what its name suggested… a guideline, said the mayor. By the time the new council and senior city staff finished, the proposed spending hike dropped more than two per cent, resulting in a small increase in blended city/regional taxes of 3.75 per cent.

All this despite the city’s largest-ever capital spending of $93 million…

Sam Baio: Riding the Skateboarding Craze to Success

Picture it. The year is 1962 and teenager Sam Biao has married the wheels from his sister’s roller skates to a piece of plywood. The result was an early skateboard.

“My sister wasn’t happy about it,” Baio told The Chamber’s breakfast business summit, held April 16th at the Burlington Convention Centre. “But that’s how I entered the skateboard business.”

The President and CEO of Burlington-based West 49 Inc. moved north to St. Catharines from his native Buffalo in 1974. He’s been skating ever since and West 49 now operates more than 130 stores in nine provinces.
